Design Workshop on Ideas for Space Around New Public Safety Building

The City of Somerville is hosting a design workshop, where residents can use Lego to build their ideas for the new space around the planned public safety building at 90 Washington Street—near the future East Somerville Green Line T stop.

The event will take place Thursday, Aug. 4, 4-8 p.m. at the East Somerville Community School at 50 Cross Street. The Lego will be set up on the basketball courts or in the cafeteria and participant’s efforts will also be photographed as public input.

‘Moving Wall’ Vietnam Veterans Memorial Coming to Somerville

Somerville will be a host city on this year’s nationwide tour of The Moving Wall, a half-sized replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. The Moving Wall has been traveling around the country for nearly 40 years to give those who can’t get to Washington a chance to experience the power of the memorial.

This fall, it makes its way to Somerville for the first time, setting up on the Mass. General Brigham Great Lawn at Assembly Row (399 Revolution Dr.), from Nov. 10-14.

Like the original monument, The Moving Wall displays the names of more than 58,000 American service members who died in the Vietnam War. During its five-day stay, members of the public can visit the wall and make crayon rubbings of names. Grief counselors from the Boston Vet Center will be available, and volunteers will be onsite to assist visitors 24 hours a day.

With the added distinction of hosting the wall over Veterans Day weekend, the Somerville Department of Veterans’ Services will lead the grand opening and official ceremony at the memorial on Friday, Nov. 11.

BINJ not only produces longform investigative stories that it syndicates for free to community news outlets around Massachusetts but also works with dozens of emerging journalists each year to help them learn their trade while providing quality reporting to the public at large.

Now in its 10th year, BINJ has produced hundreds of hard-hitting news articles—many of which have taken critical looks at corporations, government, and major nonprofits, shedding light where it’s needed most.

BINJ punches far above its weight on an undersized budget—managing to remain a player in local news through difficult times for journalism even as it continues to provide leadership at the regional and national levels of the nonprofit news industry.

With your help BINJ can grow to become a more stable operation for the long term and continue to provide Bay State residents more quality journalism for years to come.
