Internships
Program Basics
The Boston Institute for Nonprofit Journalism is constantly recruiting reporting interns for our spring, summer, and fall intern cohorts.
We work with university students at the undergraduate and graduate levels as well as people out of school (with the necessary journalism experience and/or training). We provide formal internships for college students receiving course credit for working with us and informal internships for everyone else.
BINJ interns are expected to produce at least one original short feature news article (700-1200 words long) for our HorizonMass news outlet while working with us and attend at least some of our weekly staff meetings on Fridays at 5 p.m. ET (online). Interns qualified to work in the US are paid for each article they produce.
Interns typically spend two to three months working with us.
All intern candidates must have received basic journalism training in a classroom setting and/or by working as a reporter before applying for a BINJ internship.
Multimedia specialists with strong photo, video, and/or audio backgrounds are especially welcome to apply.
We typically do not take college students as interns until they are at least rising sophomores and/or 19 years old (whichever comes first), although we occasionally make exceptions. We do not currently have an internship program for high school students.
How to Apply
BINJ is happy to offer two ways to join our internship program. Pick whichever option best fits your style. (Choose option 1 if you want to talk to us at length before interning with BINJ or option 2 if you want to get right to work.):
- Resume, Clips, and Interview (“original”): Send links to your resume and three clips (published works … student publications are fine) to internships@binj.news. If we think you’re ready to work with us, we’ll contact you to set up an interview. If we accept you to our program, we’ll offer you the opportunity to become a BINJ intern. If you accept, when you publish your first article you’ll be added to the masthead of HorizonMass as a reporter.
- Just Pitch Us (“extra spicy”): Pitch an article idea to us in two to three paragraphs in an email to internships@binj.news. Include links to your resume and three clips (published works … student publications are fine). First paragraph, give us the basics about yourself. The next paragraph or two should just be a barebones overview of what you’d like to write. If we accept your pitch, we’ll offer you the opportunity to become a BINJ intern. If you accept, when you publish your first article you’ll be added to the masthead of HorizonMass as a reporter.
That’s the deal. Why wait? APPLY TODAY!
