Well, this is a rather specific bit of editorial writing, but I thought I should thank everyone that we sign up to start receiving our weekly BINJ.News newsletter at tonight’s Boston-area premiere of “Steal this story, please!”—the new documentary about the ongoing career of noted left-wing journalist Amy Goodman—and let you all know what our publication is all about.
BINJ.News is an independent statewide news magazine produced by the Boston Institute for Nonprofit Journalism. BINJ is a nearly 11-year-old investigative journalism incubator best known for our hard-hitting coverage of everything from prisons to immigration to homelessness. We produce big enterprise reports on key issues of the day and syndicate them for free through our MassWire news service to community news organizations across Massachusetts with budgets of under $2 million per year.
In addition, since August 2023, when we launched BINJ.News, we have also been publishing short feature articles about an extremely wide area of topics..
What makes us unique is not our left-wing editorial line, although that’s still pretty unusual in this neck of the woods, but rather our very large reporting internship program (with 30 interns in our spring 2026 cohort alone and hundreds of interns over the last several years).
Our interns are treated as “equals with less experience” and encouraged to report on their favorite beats in ways that they simply aren’t afforded the opportunity to experiment with anywhere else.
We think the results speak for themselves and we are extremely pleased to add you all to the ranks of our supporters; so that you can see the journalism we produce every week for yourselves.
Now that you’ve signed up for the weekly BINJ.News newsletter, you’ll be among the first several thousand people to read our news and views (typically 3-8 original stories) every Friday.
My fellow BINJ staffers Chris Faraone, John Loftus, Linda Pinkow and I are pleased to welcome you to BINJ.News and we—and our many pro journalists and mighty “intern army” of up-and-coming young journalists—look forward to serving you and your communities with some of the best, most relevant, reporting in the Bay State.
Thanks for backing grassroots independent news media in this most challenging period for journalism in over 100 years. We keep going because you all stick with us.
Reading this but didn’t get to see the sold-out first screening of the “Steal this story, please!” documentary? Fear not, there are several screenings over the next week. Check out the Coolidge Corner Theater website for all the details!
