Editor’s Note: That Big Op-Ed I Promised BINJ Readers … Ran In Truthout

Learn why 60 publishers joined the independent publishers’ lawsuit against OpenAI and Microsoft and what’s at stake for American journalism.

A few weeks ago, I promised BINJ.News readers that I would be writing a more in-depth article on why the Boston Institute for Nonprofit Journalism joined 59 other independent news publishers to file a mass-action lawsuit against tech giants OpenAI and Microsoft for taking large numbers of our copyrighted articles without permission or payment to train the large-language models that are at the core of their AI businesses.

But I didn’t say where I would be publishing it. I ended up running it with Truthout—a much larger news outlet that this one—because I think the suit is significant enough to deserve as much national coverage as it can get. And it hasn’t gotten much thus far.
