Roast Recap: BINJ Celebrates 10 Years With Comedy Show Fundraiser

Thanks to all the comics, contributors, and supporters who joined us in Cambridge

We pulled off something earlier this month that we are seriously proud of on multiple levels. As you may have even seen up close in person if you joined us in Cambridge two weeks ago, BINJ threw itself a comedy show—specifically a roast of Massachusetts media—to celebrate our 10-year anniversary. And it was awesome.

As we stated in the announcement, it seemed more prudent to likely slightly offend many than to maybe upset a few people majorly by inviting the wrong political or media figure to speak. As things turned out, it was a lot of fun to laugh with friends and readers in spite of the neverending roadblocks we face as a grassroots operation and despite the troubling state of domestic and global affairs.

Thanks to all of the comedians and authors who gave their time and helped make this event happen: Tommy O’Deed, Rhodes Pierre, Derick Freire, Tim Champa, Nick Zaino, Cher Lynn, Dennis Maler, Luke O’Neil, and Eoin Higgins (watch Nick Zaino’s insightful short history of the relationship between comedy and journalism here). And also endless appreciation for those who joined us, purchased tickets, and in turn contributed to help BINJ keep producing fearless independent journalism—while still having a laugh every once in a while.

The Boston Institute for Nonprofit Journalism produces bold independent journalism for Greater Boston and beyond.
Since 2015, BINJ has been producing hard-hitting news and analysis focusing on housing, criminal justice, the environment, government malfeasance, corporate corruption—and shedding light wherever it’s needed.

We work with some of the most experienced reporters in Greater Boston, and we also train dozens of emerging journalists each year to help them learn critical skills while providing quality reporting to our audience.

BINJ not only produces important stories; we also share our work for free with other community news outlets around Massachusetts, while organizing and leading at the regional and national levels of the nonprofit news industry.

We collaborate with other community publications and engage the public in civic educational initiatives

If you appreciate the work we are doing, please help us continue by making a tax-deductible donation today! With your support, BINJ can continue to provide more high-quality local journalism for years to come.
