SECOND CHANCES FOR YOUR CLOTHES AND YOUR NEIGHBORS
Somerville nonprofit partners with service providers to match used clothing with people in need
Do you need some motivation to get rid of those clothes taking up space in the back of your closet? Consider this: It’s relatively easy for you to get those clothes into the hands of people in our community who could really use them.

COVID-19 Risk is High Again

The City of Somerville announced last week that the COVID-19 Community Level is now considered “high.” All of Middlesex County and many other nearby counties are also at a high level.

The CDC recommends these prevention tips when community levels are high:

  • Wear a mask indoors in public
  • Stay up to date with COVID-19 vaccines
  • Get tested if you have symptoms
  • Stay home if sick or recently exposed
  • Additional precautions may be needed for people at high risk for severe illness.

Residents can now get free, high-quality KN95 masks at all three Somerville public libraries and at City Hall during business hours. The following CVS pharmacies are offering free N95 masks (while supplies last): 532 Medford St., 495 Grand Union Blvd., and 1 Davis Square.

You can find more pharmacies offering free masks with the CDC lookup tool, or call 3-1-1 (617-666-3311) for assistance.

Farmers Markets Reopening

A sure sign of spring: Opening Day at Somerville’s farmers markets.

The 18th Annual Union Square Farmers Market returns to the Union Square Plaza this Saturday, May 14, and every Saturday through Oct. 29. At this year’s “COVID-Conscious” market, masks are required from 9-10 a.m., and encouraged but not required from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. https://www.unionsquaremain.org/2022-fmseason

Opening day at the East Somerville Farmers Market is Sunday, May 15, from 9:00 am-1:00 pm at the East Branch Library, 115 Broadway. https://www.eastsomervillemainstreets.org/market

The Davis Square Farmers Market opens Wednesday, May 18, from noon-6 p.m. through Nov. 23, rain or shine, in the municipal parking lot at the intersection of Herbert and Day Streets. https://www.massfarmersmarkets.org/davis

Library Offers Tech Support

The Somerville Public Library is offering free help with computer tasks. Somerville residents can book a 30-minute meeting (in person or online) with a librarian to get help with computer tasks, like using online meeting platforms like Zoom, accessing social media, filling out a job application or other online forms, using Microsoft Office products, setting up an email account, and other useful tasks.

To schedule an appointment, contact Tim at 617-623-5000 x2963, or email him at tdevin@minlib.net.

BINJ not only produces longform investigative stories that it syndicates for free to community news outlets around Massachusetts but also works with dozens of emerging journalists each year to help them learn their trade while providing quality reporting to the public at large.

Now in its 10th year, BINJ has produced hundreds of hard-hitting news articles—many of which have taken critical looks at corporations, government, and major nonprofits, shedding light where it’s needed most.

BINJ punches far above its weight on an undersized budget—managing to remain a player in local news through difficult times for journalism even as it continues to provide leadership at the regional and national levels of the nonprofit news industry.

With your help BINJ can grow to become a more stable operation for the long term and continue to provide Bay State residents more quality journalism for years to come.
