Somerville Homeless Coalition to hold Sleep In Sleep Out
To raise awareness about homelessness, the Somerville Homeless Coalition has announced that they will be holding the 2nd annual Sleep In Sleep Out Event. It will take place the weekend of May 13-15. Those choosing to participate in sleep in their backyard, basement, living room, or the SHC Team sleep outside—anywhere beyond the comforts of your bed.
“Last year, our team braved the elements (it rained hard!) as we slept outside for the night. Although we will never fully appreciate the toll it takes on our homeless clients’ physical and mental health, the night fueled our passion and desire to do more for the most vulnerable in our community,” said Somerville Homeless Coalition Executive Director Mike Libby.

SPD officer suffers injury due to unintentional discharge
On April 6, a Somerville Police Department officer suffered a non-life threatening injury due to the unintentional discharge of a duty weapon. The officer was transported to an area hospital where the officer was treated and released. The individual is expected to make a full recovery, and no one else was injured.
“The officer’s firearm was holstered at the time of the discharge,” said Somerville Police Chief Charles Femino. The Somerville Police Department is conducting an internal investigation into the matter.
