LOCAL VOICES NETWORK + BINJ AT THE NEW HAMPSHIRE PRIMARY

We are thrilled to add two sessions with the Local Voices Network to our schedule of events during the lead-up to New Hampshire’s first-in-the-nation presidential primary. In the spirit of the Citizens Agenda that BINJ is using to guide our coverage in the Granite State, LVN will engage members of the public in dialogue about the issues that affect their lives (as opposed to chasing popular media narratives). Here’s some more about our new partners:

The Local Voices Network (LVN) is fueled by ordinary people sharing their voices in small-group, in-person discussions led by experienced conversation hosts in the community. LVN hosts organize these conversations in gathering spots such as libraries, community centers, and kitchen tables, where participants will have a unique opportunity to listen, learn, speak and be heard. Learn more with these articles from the Center for Cooperative Media and the Urban Libraries Council.

At the center of these conversations is a “digital hearth,” a specialized device that records the discussion as the host guides the group through questions about locally relevant topics. The hearth also has a speaker that enables hosts to play clips from previous conversations to prompt discussion and cross-pollinate diverse perspectives across the community.

LVN will host at least two small discussions (3 to 8 participants each) in the BINJ pop-up newsroom at the Shaskeen Pub—Thursday, Feb. 6 at 1pm, and Friday, Feb. 7 at 1pm. We will buy you lunch and listen to what you have to say about the primary and the candidates. If you would like to participate,  RSVP here or email max@lvn.org

If you appreciate the work we are doing, please keep us going strong by making a tax-deductible donation to our IRS 501(c)(3) nonprofit sponsor, the Boston Institute for Nonprofit Journalism!

BINJ not only produces longform investigative stories that it syndicates for free to community news outlets around Massachusetts but also works with dozens of emerging journalists each year to help them learn their trade while providing quality reporting to the public at large.

Now in its 10th year, BINJ has produced hundreds of hard-hitting news articles—many of which have taken critical looks at corporations, government, and major nonprofits, shedding light where it’s needed most.

BINJ punches far above its weight on an undersized budget—managing to remain a player in local news through difficult times for journalism even as it continues to provide leadership at the regional and national levels of the nonprofit news industry.

With your help BINJ can grow to become a more stable operation for the long term and continue to provide Bay State residents more quality journalism for years to come.
