BINJ TO PRESENT AT MEDIA CONFERENCES IN MAINE AND ILLINOIS

From preaching our bootstrap nonprofit philosophy and helping journalists across the country launch their own unique operations with our BINJ-in-a-Box initiative, to having our collaboration with Emerson College and MuckRock presented at the annual Online News Association (ONA) conference in New Orleans in September, we pursue a range of opportunities to share news about our lessons learned and progress with media makers beyond Boston. And on that note …

On Nov. 1, we will present at the Alliance for Community Media-New England (ACM-NE) conference in Portland, Maine. From the description of our session:

Are you looking to launch your own newsroom at your community media center? Maybe you have already done so but are interested in learning how others are doing reporting, collaborations, compelling production and distribution? This panel will give a glimpse of several different community-based news efforts and will end with a discussion about different models and how to jump-start a hyperlocal news effort at your center.

On Nov. 15, we will be at the People-Powered Publishing Conference in Chicago, Illinois. From the explainer

The Boston Institute for Nonprofit Journalism will “pop up” smack in the middle of the conference to coach journalists in how pop-ups can work in their coverage areas. There will be example props to interact with, like a game in which participants are asked to pin the heads of politicians to the amounts they took from corporate donors, as well as lessons on how to design and build compelling games on tiny budgets. Even a makeshift newsroom in the field can help media makers meet locals — especially around an election, and BINJ will show how it did it to cover the 2016 New Hampshire primary.

We will stream and tweet and keep you posted from these engagements, but if you see us at a conference or meetup, please be sure to introduce yourself and tell us about the work you are doing in your area.
